ARCA Flying Events for 2008

During the calendar year we have Four AMA sanctioned events at our field, they are:

The 19th Annual Central Texas Jet Rally; This event is scheduled for May 16-18. The CD will be Ken White.  The jets have real jet engines which run on JP4, they turn up to 150,000 RPMs and put out as much as 45+ lbs of thrust. They sound and start up just like the big ones.  Their speed is limited to 200 mph for safety reasons. There may also be some fan jets flying. For this event we will have around 30 to 50+ turbine jets airplanes flying all day Friday and Saturday.

The 10th Annual War Birds Event; This event is scheduled for April 25-27. The CD will be Edwin Smith. The planes for this event are primarily WWI and WWII vintage.  They consist of German, English and American Bi-planes from the 1910 to the 1920's+, the WWII planes consist of German, English, Japanese, American and other nationality planes.  There will be single engine and twin engine fighters, bombers. We will have around 50 to 75+ World War I and World War II planes as well as jet planes from the Korean and Vietnam wars flying all day Friday and Saturday.

The 10th Annual Big Bird Event; This event is scheduled for Aug 29-31. The CD will be Doug Nelle.  The planes for this event must have a wing span of at least 80 inches and will go on up to 10' or 12'+. They fly at speeds up to 200+ mph.  These planes will be giant fighters as well as giant aerobatics planes which are just wild.  For this event we will have around 50 to 75+ airplanes of all shapes and sizes with wing spans of 80 inches and larger flying all day Friday and Saturday.

The 7th Annual Helicopter Event; This event is scheduled for Oct 03-05. The CD will be Robin Masek.  These Helicopters sound and perform just like their big brothers but even better.  They can do maneuvers that the big boys can't do just because of their structural strength.  In addition to the day flying we have night flying.  The Helicopters are lit up like Christmas trees and do wild night maneuvers.  For this event we will have around 30 to 50+ helicopters of all shape and sizes flying all day Friday and Saturday.

Fun-Fly Events; During these Fun-Flies (we will have separate gas and electric Fun-Fly events), ARCA club members and other Austin area clubs are invited to participate in these flying events which are just fun and exercise their flying skills and the pilots can win prizes ($).  The events change from fun-fly to fun-fly, but the following are some that we have had in the past:

    1.  Taxing up and down the runway against the clock, around cones and busting a balloon. (Sounds easy doesn't it, Ha! Ha!)

    2.  Dropping a bomb from your airplane into a box, (well as near to the box as possible).

    3.  Throw the dice, start your plane, take off, do a roll and a loop and land your plane. This is against the clock.

    4.  Take off and land in a numbered square on the runway. (I consider it a good landing if I hit the runway much less hitting a particular spot)

    5.  More Fun events to be added.

Club 40 Racing Events; ARCA club members and other Austin area clubs are invited to participate in these pylon racing events which are designed to be fun and exercise all levels of pilot skills. The objective of this event is to provide an entry level pylon racing class that is affordable.

See the Club 40 Rules to learn more about this event.
